Wolves’ Tommy Doyle may have provided a new hint about next season, with his loan at Birmingham City having now finished.
Tommy Doyle joined Blues ahead of the 2025/26 campaign after he struggled badly for minutes last term under both Gary O’Neil and then Vitor Pereira.
It was seen as a real coup for Birmingham to sign Doyle, a player who knows the Championship inside and out.
Should any of these NOT be on this list? And are there any who aren’t there who SHOULD be on? 🤔
The Athletic have claimed Wolves would like these nine players to stay after relegation…
He started well, but Doyle ultimately struggled for regular starts at St. Andrew’s.
There was a clause which would allow Birmingham to sign Doyle permanently for £10 million if they were promoted to the Premier League.
But they missed out – and it now looks like Doyle will not be heading back.
Tommy Doyle sends message after Birmingham loan
Doyle has taken to social media to send a message after the Championship season ended.
He said (via X): “Thank you @BCFC for everything this season. I’ve loved wearing the shirt & playing for you all. Wishing you all the best in the future.”
The final line of this message makes for interesting reading.
It very much reads as though Doyle won’t be heading back to Birmingham in any new move, and will now return to Wolves.
That doesn’t mean to say he’ll definitely be staying at Wolves just yet.
The club could easily get Doyle a new loan move, or perhaps even sell.
But that would be a foolish play from the Old Gold, with Doyle having as much experience in the Championship as he does (nearly 100 appearances).

Realistically, Wolves are about to lose Andre, with the Brazilian attracting attention from other clubs after relegation.
There is surely no way he stays, and Doyle would be a convenient yet great replacement for him at the base of the midfield.
Although not on Andre’s level, Doyle plays in a similar way in terms of being good at recycling the ball and keeping things ticking. He can also be tenacious.
Doyle will now return to Wolves for talks about the next steps – but a return to Birmingham looks dead in the water, and hopefully he’ll be retained to help spearhead Wolves’ promotion bid.
Rob Edwards has already mentioned that he knows about Doyle’s qualities from when he worked for the England FA, so that does further suggest the midfielder will be kept around.
And you need only look at the replies to Doyle’s message to determine that he’d be a very good player to have in that squad, with many complimenting his quality and professionalism.
