The work has already started for Wolves ahead of the 2026/27 season, with scouts attending a fixture in Portugal at the weekend.
Wanderers are relegated and will play Championship football from next season, and it seems steps are already being taken to prepare for what will be a challenging campaign.
Should any of these NOT be on this list? And are there any who aren’t there who SHOULD be on? 🤔
The Athletic have claimed Wolves would like these nine players to stay after relegation…
The squad will be looking radically different, with a host of sales set to happen when the window opens.
Wolves have got to make sales in order to trim the wage bill and, crucially, create a squad that is appropriate for the second tier.
And it seems Wolves already have their eyes on a league that has served them very well in the past.

Wolves scouts attending Porto vs Alverca

It’s been reported by outlets in Portugal (A Bola and Record, via Sport Witness) that Wolves had scouts in attendance for the game between Porto ad Alverca last Saturday.
Porto won the game 1-0, a result that clinched them the league title for the 31st time.
It is unclear who Wolves were there to watch specifically.
But quite possibly some of the Alverca players could have been on the agenda, given Wolves have now dropped into the Championship. Porto players would be more difficult to lure.
Although that said, Wolves did succeed on this front in 2017, signing Ruben Neves and Willy Boly when they were still in the Championship.
Interestingly, Alverca had two former Wolves players in their side.
One was Chiquinho, who Wolves offloaded to Alverca last summer.
And the other was Bastien Meupiyou, who also left for the same club last summer. Meupiyou was signed by Wolves in the summer of 2024, but never made a first-team appearance.
Interestingly, Wolves confirmed (via their official website) when they sold Meupiyou that they do hold a clause that will allow them to re-sign the defender in the future.
So it’s not out of the question that they could look to bring him back.

With Chiquinho’s exit announcement there was no suggestion of any kind of buy-back clause.
Other players Wolves may have been watching include Mateus Mendes Figueiredo and Lincoln from Alverca.
